Eglise Ste-Flavie et le feu de 1948 | Le Mitis/Bas-St-Laurent
Ste-Flavie’s first church was built out of wood and was in use from the end of the 1840s till the 1880s, after which it was replaced by the larger stone structure that you see in the photo below. This is the church that stood until the terrible fire of 1948.
A newspaper account from l’Avantage en ligne explains how the fire started in the basement around 6 a.m when the Sacristan was lighting the fire. He ran upstairs to inform the Cure, and parishioners who had started to arrive for 7 a.m. Mass rang the alarm and called for the Mont-Joli firefighters.
Unfortunately, due to the intense cold, the firefighters couldn’t draw water from the river, so their pumps were useless.
Excerpt: As Cure Dionne rushed to save various holy vestments and other objects hundreds of Ste-Flavie parishioners and volunteers from Mont Joli fought desperately to save the church. As noon approached, the body and roof of the church were burning. In the afternoon everything began to give way. The most desolate moment was when the bell sank down into the ruins, as the roof collapsed. (loose translation)

Quebec City – rue de La Fabrique & Simon’s
The founder of Simon’s was a John Simon (son of Peter Simon of Scottish heritage). I believe that this Peter Simon who married Margaret McNiel in St.Andrew’s Parish (Quebec City) on the 9th of July 1822, could be John’s parents.

Lagace/Mignier Marriages – A Canadian Family Tree (1) | Lagace/Mignier, Abraham to Bruno
This is the first in a series of posts in which I share marriages extracted from my database (A Canadian Family) where the groom was a Lagace/Mignier who descended from the Quebec pioneer couple Andre Mignier dit Lagace (Soldier of the Regiment Carignan) and the “fille du roi” – Jacquette Michel. The focus is on Quebec marriages from 1668 to 1921 in which the 20th century descendants carry the LAGACE surname (as opposed to Mignier or Meunier) You will also find a scattering of New Brunswick, Ontario and U.S. marriages.
As I have discussed elsewhere, the “Lagace/Mignier cluster of surnames is very problematic for those who are new to Quebec genealogy. It is very common to find a given individual listed, for instance, as a Lagace/Mignier, a Mignier/Lagace, or just Lagace, or a variation of those names (e.g. Lagasse, Minier). In this database the surname was standardized to Lagace / Mignier.
1. SURNAMES They have been standardized and dit names and alternate spellings are frequently included.
2. NAMES The forenames of Joseph or Mary (Marie) have been dropped.
3. LOCATIONS Place names have been standardized to reflect Quebec’s current nomenclature and are placed in their respective administrative regions. Beginners take note: Many genealogists use only the original, documented place names. You’ll need to decide what’s best for you.
4. MORE INFORMATION My database also contains : the parents of the female spouses and the parishes where the marriages below took place. You can contact me by leaving a question in the comment box below.

Traditional Buildings Of Kahnawake (1) | Stone house
This is a photograph I took one afternoon a few weeks ago. It’s just one of the many traditional stone houses that can still be seen around Kahnawake (Caughnawaga). This one is just down the street from St-Francois-Xavier Church and it seems to be built in the familiar style of French -Canadian pioneer home - although I’m no expert!
If you know anything about this building,
please a drop me a line in the Comment Box below. Thanks!
