A Mazerolle Descendant’s Notes about Shippegan’s Cafe Royale (New Brunswick)
Some time ago I published a vintage
postcard of the historic Cafe Royale of Shippegan
and some follow-up comments by Phil Thibodeau (Cafe Royale “the best fish meal … cod in cornmeal”).
Today I’m really happy to share some follow-up comments by Ray Manzerolle - grandson of Willie P. and Yvonne Manzerolle (former proprietors).
Here are Ray’s comments:
“It was a nice surprise to stumble upon this photograph.
The Cafe Royal was owned and operated by my grandfather Willie P. Manzerolle and his wife Yvonne. The photo was most likely taken by my grand father, he owned a postcard taking box camera. He also operated a bakery in the rear of the building which at one time furnished the entire region with bake goods. The restaurant was divided into two sides. One side was casual dining, serving burgers, shakes etc, very popular with teenagers. The other side was more formal with fine dinning. As a kid I recall that they made a killer lobster clubhouse sandwich.
When visiting my grand parents, we would stay upstairs in one on the 4 or 5 boarding rooms that were no longer being rented. The building still exists, although it has been converted entirely into apartments. Good memories.”
Evelyn in Montreal: Jean Hudon dit Beaulieu m. Marie-Anne Lizotte (N.B. 1865)
Query from
Hi, I am looking for my great great grandfather’s family. I got his name in the Drummond, NB Church books. His name is Jean Hudon who was adopted by a Beaulieu Family. They lived in Riviere Ouelle, QC. I know he married Marie-Anne Lizotte in St-Basile, NB in 1865. Any information would be helpful. Thanks
Reply:
1. I believe that rather than being adopted, it is probable that Jean was actually named Jean Hudon dit Beaulieu, and that he is from the lineage that eventually took the surname of Beaulieu (as opposed to those who now call themselves Hudons. Read more »

I am seeking the parents, and beyond, of Judith Dugas, m. Francois d’Assisi Theriault
This is for a friend’s chart…
Any help is gratefully appreciated
Information
The Dugas family is not one of my “focus” lines but the following information can be found in Fidele Theriault’s “Les Familles de Caraquet”.
The Judith Dugas who married Francois d’Assisi Theriault in 1833 (Gloucester County, New Brunswick) was the daughter of Bruno Degas and Judith Allain. Read more »
Evelyn in Montreal: Fissiault/Giroux Pomela, her birth ca.1875 Caughnawaga/Kahnawake, help required
Ghislaine is looking for this information -
My grand-mother, Pomela Giroux, was born in Caughnawaga and married Jean Hypolite Adolphe Fissiault dit Laramée in Ottawa Ontario but I cannot find her birth Certificate. I have looked in the Parish register of St-Francois-Xavier de la Longue-Pointe (Caughnawaga) but it is badly written or damaged.
Do you have any information?
I was unable to track down Pomela Giroux’s birth certificate so I’m publishing this information in the hope that some readers have this family in their database (or access to other records). Note 1: The information about her Caughnawaga birth comes from the marriage records. She was born about 1875. Note 2: It is interesting that Pomela (as opposed to Pamela) is a common name in the Two Mountains/Deux Montagnes areas. Read more »
