Lineage of Joseph Albert Laval Theriault of the Sayabec Therriaults
An enquiry from Rene Swan (Theriault)
” On my father’s side I am French, Irish and Mí’kmaq. I am also certain I have family in St. John’s Newfoundland and even went on souljourn there. I may get vertigo on a swing, but I ran to the sea and my sail from North Sydney Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques Newfoundland was wonderful and familiar to me, as was the return sail homeward bound to my Dear Lorraine! … So for a multitude of reasions, I celebrate that I am a Theriault.
I’m known in the music industry as René Swan, and have been since I was 15. By the way, on my mother’s side, it is documented that my third great uncle was Danish children’s author, Hans Christian Andersen. Question: Can you explore the possibility of any connection between Nicole (Theriault, the singer) and I and or any other relatives I may have out there?

German Quebecker Michel Franck m. Appoline Dick (Gresse)
Query from Deborah:
I am looking for more on my German-Quebec roots. Our surname is Franck but I have seen it written as Frank and Franc. I have a transcription from the Register of Baptisms and Marriages from the Paroisse de Notre-Dame de Liesse de la Riviere-Ouelle, 1787 which describes the marriage of Michel Franc of Germany, son of Andre Franc and Catherine Cauneum and Marie Francoise Gauthier of Riviere-Ouelle, daughter of Pierre Gauthier and Marie Francoise Bilodeau.
I descend from Michel Franc’s second marriage to Marie-Appoline Dick-Gresse (?). I wonder if you are able to provide further direction on where I can search further for Michel’s origins and why he came to Quebec.
Answer
I don’t have a definite answer for you but the dates do fit with the story of the first Germans who came to Quebec as mercenaries. Your ancestor may be one of those who stayed behind. I wrote a short introduction about this here -
Sprechen Sie Deutsch? The “Secret” Germans of Quebec
And Their Part in Repelling the American Invasion of Canada
The following is a definitive English language source for the period but I haven’t read it and don’t know if there is information there for you as this is not one of my focus areas.
Demarce, Virginia Easley (1984) The Settlement of Former German Auxiliary Troops in Canada After the American Revolution Publisher: Lost in Canada ISBN 978-0916849023.
Another useful search term would be “Quebec Hessians”.
Albany M. Robichaud m. Dorina Cormier, New Brunswick 1929
Craig Dougherty asks:
I have traced my family back to Abraham 2nd Dugas also my maternal line all the way back to one of the mother of Acadia Ann Brenon. I did find my judge but he was a Superior Court Judge. His name was Albany M Robichaud 22 Jul 1903 in Shippegan to 27 Oct 1974 Bathurst. He was also the Mayor of Bathurst from 1945 to 1947. He was married to a Dorina Cormier who I know would be my most recent connection to for my roots are Dugas/Cormier from Caraquet. I just started this search but so far have not confirmed her parents. I am leaning towards a Sylvester Cormier being her father but am still working on that.
I am also trying to locate myseld a copy of the book (Theriault Fidele (1985) Les Familles de Caraquet. ISBN 0-9692151-0-X) to buy but am having no luck locating anyone selling it. Keep digging! Cheers, Craig Dougherty

3. The easiest way to find a copy of Fidele Theriault’s book (and most probably to make direct contact with him) is to post your query at the Theriault Surname Board at Genforum. Put his name in the Subject Box.
