Old Catholic Cemetery | Kahnawake Today | A Canadian Family
Ontario reader Don Diminie is looking for confirmation of exactly where the Gervais McComber who died in 1866 in Kahnawake, is buried. To avoid any confusion please note that this would be the Gervais who married three times (wives = Arakwente, Giasson, Vincent) – not his son Gervais.
I wasn’t able to confirm anything for Don, but thought it was a good moment to share this recent photograph of the Old Catholic Cemetery which is located just steps away from St-Francois-Xavier Church.

Note:
There is another Catholic cemetery in Kahnawake (not too far from the Mercier Bridge) which contains many twentieth century remains.

Thank you again for the heads-up you were so kind as to send my way.
I love seeing the signs in your area in both languages. It is beautiful to see that the Kahnawake have endured, when so many other Native cultures have struggled to preserve their heritage.
Yes, we’re very lucky in this area. Actually, in Kahnawake we have primarily English and/or Mohawk with some French near the main highway. Then in Chateauguay and the rest of the province the signs are in French with sometimes English.
I’m responding to the inquiry about Gervais McComber. According to my elderly relatives, he is buried under the floor of St. Francis Xavier Church.
This was common practice for those regarded highly in the Catholic community. I wonder if Don is related? I have been researching a mysterious branch of my family which partially includes the McCombers.

Thank you very, very much for this information, Charleen. You are very generous to step forward with this detail, and with the general information about burial practices.
When I get home I’ll put you into contact with the other reader.
Have a great day!
Evelyn

Hi, I am a researching the McComber Family and it was great to hear that he could be buried under the floor. I have not been to the cemetery but would love to go have a look, are there any markers on the graves? Also in my research there are so many native names i cannot pronounce. Is there any list? or something that I could cross reference with? Thanks, Lynn
