I teach history at West Potomac High School in Fairfax County, VA, and I have a question that I hope you can answer. Mrs. Surrat, one of the Lincoln assassination conspirators, is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Her grave marker lists her name simply as "Mrs. Surrat." A cross is on the marker but it is tilted to the right. There are no other words or marking on the marker. What does the cross titled to the right signify? I hope that you can help me (or refer me to someone else who may be able to answer my question). I deeply appreciate your assistance.
