The Bellevue Casino On A Swizzle Stick

Bellevue Casino Swizzle Horizontal

As I’ve mentioned before, during the 1940s and 50s my parents often frequented nightspots that were part of Montreal’s heyday as the jazz and nightclub capital of Canada. As my mom would leave me with the babysitter she always promised to bring me back a swizzle stick! The words along the side of the swizzle stick read “Bellevue Casino Montreal Canada”.

  2. That is a nice thing to collect as they do not take up so much space. I have seen some really neat ones, but not this one. I do not drink, but have been around people that did and had these in there drinks.

  5. As I was waiting on my comment to post I happened to glance at your about me. I just noticed that you too are a genealogy freak just like me! lol So far I haven’t found any of my ancestors in Canada. Have you found any of yours in the United States in the West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio areas?

  6. That is so cool! I’ve never heard of the Bellevue Casino. I wasn’t a real casino, was it? I’ve heard stories of many old time nightspots (none of which I can recall at this moment) but that one doesn’t ring a bell.

My father and his family lived in Griffintown even before the Bonaventure Expressway was constructed and I have heard countless stories of the “life and times”. As a matter of interest, my father’s good friend owns the only working stable that still exists on the island of Montreal and runs tourist caleches. The last I heard he had received a large sum of money to sell and am not sure of the outcome. Must look into that.

    A la prochain.

  7. What a fun thing to get from their nights out. I used to love the little swords you would get in sandwiches too.

  12. Great swizzle stick with the dancing girl on the top. Don’t ya love looking at old things that you’ve had for years? I guess that’s why we do it to enjoy later!

  13. Cool! My parents and grandparents would often bring me back something of the like, including drink umbrellas and whatever table decoration. I love them all! I saved a few of my own over the years too ;)

  14. My parents did the same thing! I loved the swizzle sticks and sometimes they would bring back paper umbrellas too-like Robin said.

In Los Vegas, we went to a museum that showed videos of the destruction of the old casinos and had museum cases full of swizzle sticks! I thought that was wonderful and hilarious and left DH and DS watching the films while I drooled over the swizzle sticks.:)

  15. If I may add to all of the above… My name is Ray Hoare (formerly from Montreal, now of Vancouver) and I am the co-founder of International Swizzle Stick Collectors Association. We have been in operation since 1985, and have 80 + members and have a biennual convention in Las Vegas every odd numbered year..
My own collection is in excess of 52,000 swizzle sticks – all of an advertising nature, and obviously I am always looking” to add..
We’d also like to chat with any other collectors as potential members of our collectors club.. Hope to heart..

  16. My father worked at the Bellevue Casino, my godfather was the owner, Harry Holmock. Both have long since passed away. I would love to have the swizzel stick as a keepsake to give to my son. Would you be willing to sell it. My father also worked at Ruby Foo’s . Warmest regards, Helen.

  17. Hi
I have a bronze Bellevue Casino Montreal Canada swizzle stick. In my younger years I saved swizzle sticks and my boss at that time would bring me one from different places every Monday morning.

I have had this for many years as I was in my early twenties. I am willing to sell this if anyone is interest.

  18. I would very much like to purchase this for a souvenir for my son. My godfather Harry Holmock and my father Dick Trautman were owners of the Bellevue Casino and this swizzle stick would be a very good memory to have. I dont have any souvenirs from the Bellevue Casino and too young to have memories, but my older sisters tell me many stories. If you can part with this, I would be very much appreciated.
