Windsor Station – Traditional Transportation Making A Comeback?
In an article today by Andy Riga I learned of an exciting new project that would see Montreal’s venerable Windsor Station “reborn as a major transportation hub, welcoming trains, buses and tramways”. I have to admit that I rarely get such heartening news over my morning coffee and Montreal Gazette!
This proposed resurrection of Windsor Station heartens me because it’s one of Montreal’s grandest and most historic secular buildings, so anything that brings it back to its former glory is “a good thing”. Moreover this eco-friendly project fits in perfectly with today’s spirit of the times. Public transportation then-and-now – something to celebrate!
Vintage Postcard
This is the first of a series of historic views of Windsor Station, Dominion Square and Windsor Hotel that I will be publishing over the next few weeks. The one I’m sharing today is from the early twentieth century, and in fact the faded postmark seems to read May ’08.

I can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures. I find this very exciting, even though I live nowhere near Windsor and have never seen the station in person. Admittedly, I am a transportation nerd, but there is something so wonderful about transportation hubs. There is a certain beauty in being able to transfer from one transportation mode to another. Does the station still look like this?
Train stations from the past. Local Historical Societies are converting many of the stations in my state to museums.
It is nice one, it can turn to be museum? Or library?

I love to hear about old train infrastructure being put back into service. Our local tracks are used only to carry sand today. There used to be a passenger service that ran from Boston to the ski areas in North Conway. It would be lovely to have that run re-established! I’ll be watching your blog for the rest of the series.

A railway stations is a very special sort of place. I love the atmosphere – the hustle and bustle, the comings and goings, the meetings and greetings, the farewells. I’m delighted to hear that this one in Montreal is going to be reborn.
What wonderful architecture. Hurray for public transportation! Union Station in DC has been renovated too – trains, a mix of shops and cafes, a restaurant or two. It could be wonderful.
