Descendants of Philippe Theriault and his wives Tharsile Plourde and Mathilde Theriault
Every Saturday evening Randy Seaver hosts a fun little activity over at his blog Genea-Musings so I decided to jump in this week with his challenge to choose one set of great-grandparents and list their descendants. I chose my paternal great-grandparents. It was an interesting exercise because it reminded me that I need to go back and check a lot of the collateral lines of our far flung Theriaults!
I descend from Philippe Theriault and his first wife Tharsile (Marguerite) Plourde who were married in 1877 in Tignish (Prince County) Prince Edward Island (Canada). They had 11 children: my grandfather Rosaire, Alexandre (m. Philomene Godin), Auguste Amedee, Octave, Michel Pierre (m. Rose Delima Morneau), Thomas, Pierre (m. Regina Perrault), Marianne (m. Henri Landry), Jacques Joseph (m. Marguerite Theriault), Auguste and Arthur.
My grandfather Rosaire Theriault married Yvonne Leger in 1932 in St-Honore (Temiscouata) Quebec and they had four children, 10 grandchildren and now almost a dozen great grandchildren. Auguste Amedee Theriault married Genevieve Theriault in 1903 in Val Brillant (Quebec) and they had two children Paul and Jenne. Octave Theriault married Anne Gauthier in 1913 in Val Brillant (Quebec) and they had 6 children. Thomas Theriault married Amedee Gendron in 1910 in Val Brillant (Quebec) and they had four children.
My great grandfather Philippe Theriault and his second wife Mathilde Theriault had 10 children: Regina (m. Leo Paul Viau) , Leonie (m. Arthur Labrie), Philippe (m. Juliette Lemay), Malvina (m. Henri Valmore) , Leonard (m. Rita Leduc) , Lionel (m. Germaine Colette), Ernest (Yolande Lambert), Francois (m. Diane Leblanc) , Leontine and Albertine.
P.S. For anyone who’s been away on a retreat or hiding under a rock the last few weeks (smile), Genea-musings has been nominated for a Family Tree Award in the All Around Best Category. Congratulations, Randy!

Vintage Postcard: Sherbrooke, Quebec. Magog river and bridge (pre-1907)
This is a historic image of the Magog River and Bridge in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The Magog is one of two rivers that intersect in Sherbrooke with the other being the St-Francois. Sherbrooke was settled at the end of the 18th century by United Empire Loyalists. The Loyalists were Americans who were loyal to the British Crown and therefore moved to Canada after the American War of Independance. It is at the heart of the traditional region called the Eastern Townships and the modern administrative region called l’Estrie.
This is an enlarged detail from John Rapkin’s ca. 1850 map of East Canada and New Brunswick. You can view the complete original online at Mcgill University’s La Collection W.H. Pugsley de Cartes Anciennes du Canada. You can see Sherbrooke to the left between Brompton and Orford. Read more »

Quebec Horse Racing: “a sport offering colour and excitement” or animal cruelty?
When I opened my Montreal Gazette this morning, this is what I saw – Ponies put out to pasture, so I decided that this would be a good time to share this vintage postcard of harness racing at the Trois-Rivieres Hippodrome in the late 1960s.
The text on the back of the card describes harness racing as “a sport offering color and excitement”. I’ve never been to a modern horsetrack so I can’t speak to whether it’s exciting, but I can say that even though horse-racing has a century-old tradition in our province, it no longer “attracts large crowds” in Quebec. In fact, Quebec’s horse racing industry has been in steady decline for some time and it’s reached a final crisis over the past few months as first the Trois-Rivieres Hippodrome and now the famous Blue Bonnets Raceway seem to have closed down for good.
