Vintage Postcard: Sherbrooke(Quebec) Historic Tramway
This is a historic view of Melbourne Street in Sherbrooke. Note the tramway in the background which was a symbol of modernity when it began running in 1889. Trams were replaced by buses in 1931.
Sherbrooke was first settled by Loyalists (English-speaking Americans who fled the U.S. after the War of Independence) and is located in what was known historically as the Eastern Townships.

Transit History of Sherbrooke, Quebec
Bagotville, St-Maurice Valley, Quebec.
This is an early twentieth century view of Bagotville which is located in the St-Maurice Valley, Quebec. Bagotville was merged with Grande-Baie and Pro-Alfred to form the town of La Baie, and La Baie was then folded into the city of Saguenay. Today, when people speak of Bagotville, they’re usually referring to CFB Bagotville, a Canadian Air Force Base.

Vintage Postcard: Amos, Quebec: Sainte-Therese d’Avila Cathedral.
This is an early twentieth-century view (1930s?) of Amos (region of Abitibi-Temiscamingue). In the background you can see the famous domed cathedral of Ste-Therese d’Avila.
Large areas of Quebec continued to be colonized well into the twentieth century – and Amos is an example of this. It’s called “Le Berceau de L’Abitibi” – the Cradle of Abitibi, and was officially established only in 1910. It will be interesting to see what family surnames appear on the 1921 Canadian Census when it’s released to the public – although I know that the very first settlers were Turcottes.
