Historical Document: Joseph Lagace m. Emma St-Hilaire, 1885 (French Canadians)
This is the marriage of French-Canadians
Joseph Lagace and Emma St-Hilaire
** provided by Peter Lagasse **
Information extracted from Marriage Record
by Evelyn Yvonne Theriault
Joseph Lagace (son of Jean Lagace and Caroline Huart) and Emma St-Hilaire (daughter of Louis St-Hilaire and Judith Boissonneau) were married on January 12th, 1885, following the usual publication of three bans.
Joseph was a labourer and of legal age at the time of his marriage, whereas Emma St-Hilaire was a minor and required her parents’ consent to marry. The priest, Father Vallee, confirmed that both bride and groom were from his parish (St-Flavien de Lotbiniere) and that there were no known impediments to the marriage.
Official witnesses to the marriage were the bride’s godmother Mathilda Boissonneault and Omere St-Hilaire.

All Creatures Great And Small, Eveline Melvine Luce
For her 13th Edition of Smile For The Camera, footnoteMaven of Shades of the Departed invites us to share a photograph of a beloved family pet from our childhood – but since this is Mother’s Day in Canada, I’ve decided to share a photograph of a creature connected to my own mother’s mother!
This is a photograph of my maternal grandmother Eveline Melvine Luce standing in front of the Adelard Lagace family home in Bathurst, New Brunswick. I believe it dates from the late 1940s. There’s a notation on the back from my mother Golda Lagace where she says that ”This is the home where I was born“.
This home was actually at the center of a very small, but very busy, family farm. My grandparents raised chickens and hogs, as well as a cow to keep the family supplied with milk. All 14 children had chores to do and so did the cats!
This is why my mother doesn’t view cats quite like I do. When she was growing up the cats on her farm were fairly wild. They lived in the barn and in the fields. They were there to keep the rats at bay! According to my mother they weren’t very friendly and it took a brave child to approach their sharp teeth and claws. Yet if you take a look at this photograph you’ll see a cat brushing up against my grandmother’s leg and I have to think – since she knew the cat was there – that she wanted the cat in the photograph.
My grandfather Adelard Lagace worked long hours, six days a week, at the Bathurst Paper Mill, so my grandmother’s life must have been very tough as she managed the family farm while bearing and raising 14 children. I can only imagine what solace this cat might have provided throughout the long depression years.

Some French Canadian Lagasses (Lagace) from Quebec to New Hampshire
Today we have a very special treat – the first of what will be several Guest Posts by Maine family historian Peter Lagasse. Peter and I first met a few months ago when he contacted me with extra information about his Lagasse (Lagace) lineage. We have something in common besides genealogy because we’re both from the field of education – though Peter’s background is in the states of Maine and Vermont where he’s been active for over 25 years.
His interest in genealogy started only four years ago but I can attest to the fact that he’s already amassed a fair amount of information on his French Canadian ancestors. Peter will be sharing genealogical information, and various photographs, artefacts and primary documents related to his Lagasse/Lagace lineage, but in addition, he’ll also be sharing some surprising twists in the process of his research. Last of all, Peter will introduce other non-Lagace connections to his Canadian heritage since one cannot tell the story of a family while disregarding the other lines of one’s heritage!

The information so graciously shared by Evelyn about my Lagace/Mignier Quebec line ( Evelyn in Montreal: Some Lagasses of Maine/Massachusetts/New Hampshire) will be revised slightly from the information I will share about Joseph Lagace/Mignier’s other children and two more marriages. We will keep Joseph Lagace/Mignier as number 9 but his children from Emma St Hilaire will have numbers changed because of additions. I wish to give thanks to my second cousin, Murielle Mailhot, of Montreal for giving me leads to Joseph’s other marriages. Murielle’s grandmother, Florida Lagace/Mignier was the sister of my grandfather, Joseph Gaudiose Lagace/Mignier.

Vintage Postcard: General Electric Company, Schenectady, N.Y.

My paternal grandparents Rosaire Theriault and Yvonne Leger moved to New York in 1924 in search of work to support their growing family. My grandmother eventually found a job at the massive General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York. This plant provided a great living for many Quebeckers and New Brunswickers at a time when good jobs were scarce in Canada.
