Vintage Postcard: Dog Cart (racing sulky), Quebec (4)
Un Attelage de Chien a Quebec, Canada - A Dog Cart, Quebec, Canada n.101
From the way the driver is dressed – as a jockey I believe – I think this is a dog racing sulky.

I guess the dogs probably enjoyed pulling the carts if they weren’t too heavy, but I still feel kind of sorry for the dogs. Is that a hat on the dog?
I agree with you!
By the way – when are you going to announce your June Scavenger Hunt! Just in June?
Great card but that poor puppy
I also wonder if the dog is wearing a hat?!
I agree too! But at the same time I think that a very large and beloved dog would be happy to pull certain things for the family. Sled pulling huskies are certainly loaded down yet are not outlawed like dogcarts are. I don’t really see the difference as long as the dog is strong enough and there is no cruelty involved! It’s always a joy Evelyn!
well he looks strong enough to win the race!
handsome dog!
Happy PFF!
imajica’s postcards!

The poor dog doesn’t look too thrilled!
What a wonderful card, really love it.
debby
Great card. I loved the detail of the head.
The driver looks mean … and the dog isnt too happy about that hat, is he …
Hello

Thank you for sharing this delightful vintage card.
A very unique look into the past
Dogs are very strong and the little Jockey was
not to heavy but glad I am not a dog
Happy Postcard Friendship Friday to you .
Have a wonderful weekend.
Blessings of joy to you .
Lovely vintage card you are sharing this week.
Am looking forward to the weekend and getting to work on a card or two.
I’m pretty sure that the dog loves the running part and is giving that look because he isn’t. It’s a great card.
Bonjour.
I saw the racing sulky listed first and thought horses! And then saw dog cart. How funny is that! Great card.
I lived in Montreal and Rosemere for my first 10 years and my husband is from Dorval. Love visiting every year.
HI there! Great postcard, thanks for sharing with us… I love the hat on the dog, and it’s really nice that you included close ups of the postcard! I also love anything and anyone from Quebec… what an incredible city and beautiful countryside… have a great weekend!
It always bothers me to see dogs as draught animals; to me they’re family members. Maybe the dog and human take turns pulling?
Life was extremely hard in the very rocky and hilly Gaspesie in northern Quebec. This vintage card dates back to the early twentieth century when the Gaspesie was still following older traditions. I have found no evidence of dogs being used for work in other areas of Quebec in such late times. I know that when Europeans arrived the Inuit were still using sled dogs (as they do today). I’ve also noticed there is a strong tradition of the use of working dogs in Belgium and at least the Norman area of France – which is where many Quebec French originated from. With the exception of this one card, all the cards I have show people and dogs working side-by-side in a traditional manner (e.g. dogs pulling carts with codfish/wood), or they are twentieth-century cards intended for tourists. I will publish some more research on this in the summer when I have time to write it up!
Thank you Chris and others for your reflection on this issue!
I loved your postcard. I was ill last weekend so did not get around to say Happy PFF!
It is such a beautiful picture!!!it the most cutest picture ive seen!!! but i feel kinda sad for that dog to carry that big wagon. but i guess dog must like it.Is that a hat on the dog?!:D,again the dog is handsome and so cute!
and i love <3 wolves!
No offence but I feel bad for the dog what if he needs water when he’s walking what if he’s hungry.
But is that a hat? But if it is than it’s a nice hat. But the dog he’s cute. I like the view behind the dog, Isn’t the wagon heavy? Well I guess so.
I love animals a lot just for saying so BYE!
