Vintage Postcard: Codfish Pressing on Beach at Grand Etang, Quebec
Catching the codfish was just the first of of many steps our ancestors went through to create codfish that would “keep”. This old postcard shows codfish being pressed on the beach.

It has been great to find this site. I am a direct descendant to Andre Mignier dit Lagace and have done alot of research on this family. There are some missing pieces that I have and any connection is a possiblity of solving the puzzle! My descendancy is: Andre/Michel/Michel/Basil/Joseph/Pierre/Hypolite/Abraham/Joseph Walter/Joseph Lester.
Our line moved through Grand Falls, Van Buren, Jacquet River, Lepreau New Brunswick. I reside on Campobello Island.
It would be great to exchange information, or at least make connection with relatives
Regards
Fred
Wow! This is such an interesting topic!
Greetings Fred,
It’s so nice to meet a Lagace in cyberspace! I have many Theriault, Leger and other “cousins” but Lagaces are a bit scarcer. This is probably because we have so many differing ways of spelling our surname.
I would be delighted to share information with you.
It seems that our lines cross back in Riviere-Ouelle in the late 1700s with Basile Mignier/Lagace and his wives.
I descend from Basile Mignier/Lagace and his second wife Catherine Dube through their son Louis Mignier/Lagace and his wife Madeleine Levesque.
If I understand correctly you descend from Basile Mignier/Lagace and his first wife Madeleine Leclerc through their son Joseph Lagace/Mignier and his wife Josette Pelletier. Am I correct?

Seeing the pictures of the codfish remind me of my grandmother who would buy dry fish to eat. It had a very strong aroma. I wonder now if it was codfish. She grew up in the Gaspe area.
I wonder if cod and codfish are the same thing. I have been in and out a lot so haven’t checked in for awhile. Just getting my thoughts together for the Aug Festival of Postcards theme of water.
