Scenes of St-Catherine Street (1/10) Montreal, Quebec
Montreal, Quebec in the early 1900s (?)

I’ve been trying to identify this 5, 10 and 15 cent store with it’s “Nothing over 15 cents” slogan. From personal knowledge (and a little “googling”) this should be a Woolworth’s store – but I can’t actually read the sign above the store.
I’ve found one reference to a St-Catherine Street Woolworth’s store by Colros (flickr see below) but it doesn’t resemble the store in this photograph.
If you’re interested in Montreal buildings you should definitely visit this site as the photographs are simply gorgeous!

A Lovell’s 1914-15 Montreal directory lists F.W. Woolworth Co Ltd stores on St Catherines St. and identifies Woolworth as a 5, 10 and 15 cent store. 395 St Catherine West, 489 St Catherine East, also 358 St Lawrence Blvd. (Hope I read these #s correctly!)

I was shocked when I saw a Woolworth’s in Germany! It brought me nack to my childhood when I walked in! Hooray for nothing under 15 cents! Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!
Diane, I am familiar with Lovell’s but thanks for looking up the store for me and for sharing the url – every little bit helps!
Marie Isabelle – I realized that there were Woolworths in the U.K. but I didn’t realize that they existed in Germany. Very interesting.
I have my own memories of Woolworths in Verdun (Montreal) in the 1950s which I’ll be sharing at another time – and I’ll also be posting a few Woolworths postcards from New Brunswick.
Thanks for the comments.
I just wonder how the modern St.Montreal look like.
Greetings Lay Hoon in Malaysia,
Modern-day St.Catherine Street in Montreal looks similar to other Main Streets in big North American cities. When you walk along and look at eye-level you see a lot of chain stores, but if you stop, take a step back and look up you can still see the lines of the original buildings.
My next postcards – which I’ll be posting weekly – will be slightly more modern.
Thanks for your interest!
Note: for those of you who are interested in modern-day postcards you can see a lot at Lay Hoon’s site:

I think this postcard is very nice and original. It shows me a small portion of what old Montreal looked like. This is actually one of the most interesting and nice postcard I’ve ever seen.
I agree with El Willy it is one of the most interesting and nicest postcards that I’ve ever seen as well and old Montreal is really cool so I really like this postcard.
It’s interesting seeing this because now St-Catherina street is more modern so we get to see what it used to look like.
It looks a lot like Marshall’s on Wellington street and Church avenue
That would make perfect sense! I couldn’t remember the name Marshalls (senior moments!) so thanks for leaving the comment.
