Riviere-Ouelle Headstone: Deschamps

francois-deschamps

This is the grave of Jean-Baptiste Francois Deschamps de la Bouteillerie. He was seigneur of Riviere-Ouelle when our ancestors Andre Mignier dit Lagace and Jacquette Michel settled there.

Francois Deschamps had arrived in Nouvelle France (New France/Quebec) in 1671 when Jean Talon was the Intendant. He had come aboard the ship Saint-Jean-Baptiste and Jean Talon said of him: “if persons of this quality readily take this route, Canada will soon be filled with people capable of maintaining it well.”

Deschamps de la Bouteillerie was granted the seigneury of Riviere-Ouelle by Jean Talon in 1672. By 1681 he was living there with about a dozen families.
